Why do I need a blind filter?

The real question is, why do I clean my machine? Taking care of your machine is just as important as brewing each cup. Regularly cleaning and keeping your espresso machine well maintained you will be certain to get a much longer lifespan out of your equipment. Not to mention consistently delicious coffee, every-time.

Every time you pull a shot of espresso through your coffee machines, rich aromatic flavours, oils and coffee residue end up within the group head. It is important that we understand that the group seal, group head and shower screen can have remaining traces of coffee from your previous shot. This means it will influence the taste of your next coffee.

Regardless of if you're using a double filter basket or a naked portafilter, cleaning is required. Blind filters for coffee machines are used in order to back flush (clean) the group head.

There are two different styles of blind filters, baskets and inserts. A stainless steel blind filter is always the best option as it seals and pressurises the group head perfectly, and allows pressure to be built up and then released by the expansion valve, in turn cleaning the group head. You can also add a spoon of chemical cleaner or espresso machine cleaning tablets to the blind portafilter basket in order to remove coffee, oils and any residue and give the group head a better clean.
