Replacing a portafilter. The most common Breville upgrade. Sorting out water. Scale is what quietly kills home espresso machines. The Claro Swiss cartridge fits a defined list of Breville models and batch ranges, so check the code before ordering. If your machine is not on that list, or you are on hard regional water, an inline cartridge from our water filters range is the more thorough answer.
Cleaning and descaling. Two separate jobs. Descaler removes hard water scale from the water path; Breville's descaler is a non-corrosive, phosphate-free, biodegradable formulation made for espresso machines, brewers and kettles. Tidying the bench. The Knock Box 10 stores up to ten pucks on an anti-slip base and comes in black, silver and white. The Knock Box 20 uses a cushioned removable bar and suits a busier bench. A note on fitment. Breville prints model codes on a plate on the machine. Find yours before you order anything. BES878 and BES880 look alike on a bench and take different accessories. Every product page here lists the models it suits, and if your code is not on the list, ask us rather than assume.

Where do I find my model number?

Breville prints the code on a plate on the machine, usually underneath or on the rear panel. It reads as a letter and number string such as BES878 or BES990. That code determines which portafilter, water filter and accessories fit, so find it before you order. It also appears in the manual supplied with the machine.
Which faults can I fix myself?

Many are user-serviceable. Blocked showerheads, scaled water paths, worn baskets and tired portafilters are all fixable with parts and cleaning products. Deeper electrical or boiler problems need Breville's service network or a qualified technician. Descaling on schedule and filtering your water prevents most of the failures we hear about.
What size milk jug suits a home setup?

The Thermal version has an integrated thermometer for texturing between 55 and 75 degrees, which helps while you are learning. Larger jugs give more room to fold air in, but leave more milk unused.
Does a descaler need to be brand-specific?

No. What matters is that it is formulated for espresso machines: non-corrosive, phosphate-free and safe on the water path. Breville's own eco descaler and eco cleaning tablets do that job, and so do the espresso-specific products in our cleaning chemicals range.
