The Portafilter That Connects You to Your Shot

Bottomless, double, single and hybrid for E61, La Marzocco, Breville and more

A portafilter is the handled filter-holder that locks into your espresso machine group head. Bottomless portafilters expose the basket underside for shot diagnostics and improving extraction technique.

The portafilter is the last thing that touches your coffee before it becomes a shot. Its thread, basket diameter, and spout configuration shape your workflow and your result. We've been supplying portafilter handles and group handles across Australia since 1999, from bare-bones replacement handles to precision-machined bottomless portafilters built for competition-level diagnostics. Every option here has earned its place in the range.

What the portafilter actually does

The portafilter is the pressure vessel your ground coffee sits in during extraction. Under 9 bars of pressure, the basket diameter determines dose capacity and extraction uniformity, while the thread type (M10 or M12) governs machine compatibility.

Spouted vs bottomless

Spouted portafilters (single or double spout) direct espresso cleanly into your cup. For home use or café service where consistent output matters more than diagnostics, a well-made spouted portafilter is the right tool.

Bottomless portafilters remove the spout entirely, exposing the basket underside. Channelling, uneven distribution, and extraction defects become immediately visible. We know from decades of fitting these that a bottomless portafilter is one of the most honest diagnostic tools in espresso. A single off-centre stream tells you exactly where your puck prep failed.

Hybrid portafilters, like the Pesado Hybrid range, use modular construction: basket head and handle are separate components, letting you swap materials or basket sizes without replacing the whole unit.

Thread and basket size

The 58mm standard fits La Marzocco, E61 machines (Rocket Espresso, ECM, Profitec, Bezzera, Lelit), and Breville 58mm models. Breville 54mm machines use a narrower basket and different lug pattern. DeLonghi machines typically use a 51mm basket with a 3-lug system. Weber Workshops offer a 49mm Unifilter format. Check your machine group thread and basket diameter before ordering.

How to choose the right portafilter

Start with your machine, not the portafilter. The group thread, lug pattern, and basket diameter are set by your machine manufacturer. Confirm your machine specifications first.

E61 machines (Rocket Espresso, ECM, Profitec, Bezzera, Lelit)

These share a standard 58mm basket and M12 thread. The MHW-3Bomber Flowlight Series bottomless in 58mm Black/Gold and the full Pesado Modular and Stainless range are built to this specification. If you want a bottomless for diagnostics, this is the most supported format in the range.

La Marzocco (Linea Mini, Linea Micra, GS3)

La Marzocco machines use a 58mm basket with their own group design. The Coffee Parts Bottomless Portafilter with M12 21g Filter is matched to La Marzocco's specification. Pesado also offer LM/E61-specific options with POM (Black), White/Black, or White/Silver handles.

Breville 58mm (Barista Pro, Dual Boiler, Oracle)

The MHW-3Bomber Astra Collection bottomless in 58mm Black/Black fits the Breville 58mm group. Pesado Hybrid Doubles in Black/Riga and White/Iris colourways are also Breville 58mm-specific.

Breville 54mm (Barista Express, Barista Touch, Infuser)

The Muvna Lucifer 3-Lugs portafilter in 54mm Sky Blue is a purpose-built 54mm fit. Pesado Hybrid and Modular Doubles also cover this format across multiple colourways.

DeLonghi 51mm

Muvna covers the standard 3-lug 51mm format and the specific 9355/9335 model group in a silicone-handled bottomless.

Handle materials

POM handles are durable and consistent for daily use. Silicone handles offer grip and heat resistance. Wood handles (walnut or teak) differ in weight and heat transfer and are valued as considered objects on the bench. Choose based on how the portafilter feels after many uses.

Coffee Parts is the exclusive Australian distributor of MHW-3Bomber, the Gold Sponsor of the 2025 World Barista Championship in Milan. The MHW-3Bomber portafilter range, including the Flowlight Series bottomless, comes from the same brand that co-designed the Panda Pitcher II with 2023 World Latte Art Champion Fan Liang. The tools on world competition benches are the tools in this range.

A portafilter upgrade works best as part of a dialled-in espresso workflow. If you're fitting a bottomless portafilter for diagnostics, pair it with a precision basket so the extraction data you're reading is worth acting on. Add a distribution tool to eliminate clumping before tamping, and a calibrated tamper matched to your basket diameter. Clean the group after every session with Cafetto cleaning products.

The portafilter is the most handled object in an espresso workflow, picked up and locked in hundreds of times a day. My dad started Coffee Parts because he could not find parts for a Faema E61. The portafilter that came with that machine is part of what started the whole conversation. Twenty-five years on, we know what makes a good one: solid thread engagement, a basket that sits true, and a handle that feels right after the hundredth shot. That is what we have chosen here. — Pedro Lara

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a portafilter and what does it do? +

A portafilter is the handled filter-holder that locks into your espresso machine's group head. It holds the filter basket containing your ground coffee and, under extraction pressure, channels hot water through the puck to produce espresso. It is identified by its thread type, basket diameter (commonly 58mm, 54mm, or 51mm), and spout configuration.

What is a bottomless portafilter and why would I use one? +

A bottomless (or naked) portafilter has no spout — the basket underside is fully exposed during extraction. This makes channelling, uneven distribution, and extraction faults immediately visible. A good puck produces a clean, even flow; poor distribution shows as off-centre or split streams. It is one of the most effective diagnostic tools for improving espresso technique, widely used in barista training.

How do I know which portafilter fits my machine? +

You need to match three things: the group thread (M10 or M12 are most common), the basket diameter (58mm for most E61 and La Marzocco machines; 58mm or 54mm for Breville; 51mm for DeLonghi), and the lug pattern. If you are unsure, contact us with your machine make and model and we will confirm compatibility before you order.

Will a 58mm portafilter fit my Breville machine? +

It depends on your Breville model. Higher-end Breville machines including the Barista Pro, Dual Boiler, and Oracle use a 58mm basket. The Barista Express, Barista Touch, and Infuser use a 54mm basket with a different lug geometry. The MHW-3Bomber Astra Collection bottomless in 58mm Black/Black is designed for Breville 58mm machines specifically. Always check your model number before ordering.

What is a hybrid portafilter? +

A hybrid portafilter, such as the Pesado Hybrid range, uses modular construction where the basket head and handle are separate components. This lets you swap handle materials or basket configurations without replacing the whole unit. It is a practical choice if you want flexibility or prefer to match your portafilter handle to your bench aesthetic.

Does the handle material affect performance? +

Handle material affects grip, heat transfer, and aesthetics rather than extraction directly. Standard POM handles are durable and heat-resistant. Silicone handles offer extra grip. Wood handles (walnut or teak) transfer heat more quickly and are valued as considered objects on the bench. Choose based on your daily workflow and how the portafilter feels after many uses.

Can I use a precision basket with an aftermarket portafilter? +

Yes, in most cases. Precision baskets from brands like VST or IMS are designed to fit standard 58mm, 54mm, or 51mm portafilter bodies. If you are buying an aftermarket portafilter to improve extraction consistency, pairing it with a precision basket is the logical next step. Check the basket diameter matches your portafilter body before ordering.
