AeroPress Australia: the coffee maker that earned its place in every bag

Original, Clear, Go and Go Plus, plus genuine filters, Able and IMS metal discs, and the Fellow Prismo.

TL;DR: AeroPress is a coffee maker that steeps grounds in a chamber, then presses them through a micro-filter. The Original brews 300 ml; the Go packs into its own mug.

Alan Adler introduced the AeroPress in 2005, and it has since become the brewer coffee professionals pack when they travel. Immersion, then air pressure through a paper or metal micro-filter, and you have a smooth, grit-free cup in about two minutes. We stock the complete AeroPress coffee maker line, from the Original and the shatterproof Clear to the Go and Go Plus travel kits, along with genuine filters, reusable discs and the accessories that make it a daily brewer.

Why the AeroPress works

Most brewers pick one method. This one borrows from three. Coffee and water steep together the way they do in a plunger, then a piston pushes the brew through a fine filter, which is a little like a filter machine and a little like espresso. That patented 3 in 1 approach is why one small tube can make a short, strong cup, a long black or a cold brew concentrate. The chamber is BPA, PCB and phthalate free, and clean-up is a puck popped into the bin and a rinse.

Is an AeroPress just a French press?

No. A French press relies on a mesh screen, so fines and oils end up in the cup. This brewer presses through a paper micro-filter (or a metal disc if you want more body), so the brew is cleaner and the grind can go finer. The pressure also shortens the brew.

Can it make espresso?

James Hoffmann puts it plainly in The World Atlas of Coffee: a hand on a plunger cannot replicate the pressure of an espresso machine. What you get is an espresso-style concentrate, which is excellent on its own or with hot water. If you want closer to true espresso, the Fellow Prismo adds a pressure-actuated valve that builds pressure before the coffee releases. We've been brewing on it in the warehouse for years, and we know which filter, cap and recipe suits which drinker.

Which AeroPress coffee maker is right for you

  • AeroPress Original: 300 ml brew capacity, standard filter size, polypropylene and silicone. The benchmark. Ships with paper filters, scoop and stirrer.- AeroPress Clear: same 300 ml chamber built in shatterproof Tritan so you can watch the brew. Stocked in Clear, Black, Blue, Green, Pink, Purple and Red.- AeroPress Go: 240 ml capacity, introduced in 2019. Everything packs inside the included mug, so this is the one that lives in a backpack.- AeroPress Go Plus: 300 ml capacity with a stainless steel mug, in Black, Cream or Pink. Brews in about two minutes and is the pick for campers and commuters.

Buy the Original if it lives on your bench. Buy the Clear if you like watching extraction or want a colour. Buy the Go or Go Plus if it lives in a bag, and choose the Plus when you want the larger chamber and the metal mug.

Paper filters or a metal disc

Official genuine paper micro-filters come in packs of 200 or 350, are biodegradable, and absorb bitter oils so you can grind finer for a clean, bright cup. A metal disc lets more oils through for a fuller-bodied cup and never runs out. The stainless disc is 316 grade steel, the Gold Tone version is super fine, and the Able Fine disc is made in the USA. The IMS Precision filter sits at 150 microns for the finest metal option we carry. Standard and XL sizes are both here, including XL papers and XL Able discs. Browse our full paper filter range if you brew on more than one method.

How to use it

Standard method: rinse a filter in the cap, twist it onto the chamber, stand it on a mug, add 15 g of medium ground coffee, add 200 ml of water at around 95 degrees, stir for ten seconds, steep to two minutes total, then plunge gently for fifteen to thirty seconds until you hear the hiss. Hoffmann suggests roughly 75 g of coffee per litre for a regular cup and 100 g per litre for something short and strong, and he recommends learning the standard method before the inverted one, because flipping a chamber of hot coffee is where things go wrong. Change one variable at a time. Grind, water temperature and steep time each move the cup.

Accessories worth adding

The Flow Control Filter Cap uses a pressure-actuated valve to stop drip-through, fits every model including the Clear, and works with paper or metal. The Carafe in Tritan lets you brew for two and pour into any cup. The Organiser stand keeps press, stirrer, cap and filters together on the bench, and the Travel Filter Holder carries standard and XL papers and discs on the road.

The brewer has its own world championship, a fan-driven event that draws around 3,000 competitors from more than 60 countries each season. Coffee Parts sponsored the 2018 World AeroPress Championship when it was held here in Australia. Four years later, Sydney's Jibbi Little, Thai-born, founder of the JIBBIJUG pitcher and 2019 Australian Latte Art Champion, won the 2022 world title. The brewer on this page is the one she won with.

This brewer is one piece of a small, honest kit. Pair it with a hand coffee grinder so the grind is fresh wherever you are, a coffee scale so 15 g means 15 g, and a gooseneck or camping kettle to hit 95 degrees on purpose rather than by luck. Keep a spare pack of papers or a metal disc in the Travel Filter Holder, and drop the whole set into a Basal travel bag. If the brewer is heading off-grid, our camping coffee range covers the stove, the water and the cups. This is the kit we pack ourselves.

I keep an AeroPress Go in the car. Road trips, early starts at the coast, a mate's place with instant coffee in the cupboard. It is the brewer I trust because it forgives a rough grind and a guessed temperature and still lands a good cup. We sponsored the world championship when it came to Australia in 2018, and I still think it is the most fun anyone has had with a coffee competition. Start with the Original, add a metal disc once you know your taste. Pedro.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is so special about an AeroPress? +

It combines immersion, pressure and micro-filtration in one hand-held brewer, so you get a clean, full-bodied cup in about two minutes with almost no clean-up. It is also shatterproof, light enough for a bag, and has a global recipe community built around a world championship.

Is an AeroPress just a French press? +

No. A French press strains through a mesh screen, so fines and oils reach the cup. This brewer steeps like a plunger, then presses the brew through a paper micro-filter or a fine metal disc, which gives a cleaner cup, a shorter brew and the option to grind finer.

Why buy one when I already own a plunger? +

Because it is worth it for most people. The Original has a 300 ml chamber, ships with filters, scoop and stirrer, and the same brewer has been in production since 2005. It replaces a plunger, a pour-over and a travel brewer with one piece of kit that cleans in seconds.

How do the Go and the Go Plus differ? +

The Go has a 240 ml chamber and packs into a plastic mug. The Go Plus has a 300 ml chamber and packs into a stainless steel mug, and comes in Black, Cream or Pink. Both use standard size filters and brew in about two minutes.

Should I use paper filters or a metal disc? +

Paper gives a cleaner, brighter cup and absorbs bitter oils, and genuine papers are biodegradable. A metal disc such as the 316 stainless, the Able Fine or the IMS 150 micron lets oils through for a fuller body and never runs out. Many owners keep both.

Can it make real espresso, and how does the Fellow Prismo help? +

A plunger cannot reach espresso machine pressure, so the result is an espresso-style concentrate rather than true espresso. The Fellow Prismo is a pressure-actuated valve attachment that holds the brew back until pressure builds, giving a thicker, more syrupy shot.

Which material makes up the Clear model? +

The Clear uses a crystal-clear, shatterproof Tritan chamber with silicone and polypropylene fittings. It has the same 300 ml capacity and standard filter size as the Original and is stocked in Clear, Black, Blue, Green, Pink, Purple and Red.

Are XL filters and caps stocked here? +

Yes. We carry XL natural paper micro-filters, the XL stainless and gold tone metal discs, the Able Fine XL disc and the Flow Control Filter Cap in XL, plus the Travel Filter Holder which fits both standard and XL sizes.
